→ Michael WilkieCreative for hire (or not).

Don't look at my book.

You might look at my work and think it looks too upscale for your business, or that the collateral looks too expensive to produce – and that very well may be – because it's work I've done for different clients each with different needs and positioning.

Don't look at the type and tell me it's too small or too hard to read. You're looking at a tiny picture of my work on the tiny display attached to your tiny laptop – so of course the type is small. Don't look at the photography and tell me you can't afford it. I work in the industry. I may have just happened to have designed the business cards for some lawyer guy whose life partner is a guy who takes these photos that are just perfect for you. And he might just give me a deal because I bought a round of Bloody Marys for his table at brunch last Saturday.

Don't look at my client list and tell me I've never done a shampoo ad or a direct mail piece for a new type of litter box. I'll just have to tell you that I've created more ads and direct mail pieces than I care to count, and that this business is about communication – not particular products. So, unless you're willing to embrace the idea that my other projects are irrelevant to you, it's probably best if I keep my work to myself.
